TINUBU FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST FBI, CIA, OTHERS TO STOP RELEASE OF US RECORDS

In the midst of a recent legal tussle over his academic records in the U.S., President Bola Tinubu now faces yet another challenge in his efforts to prevent the release of records related to his time in the United States.

This latest move sees Tinubu filing an application before a United States District Court of Columbia, contesting the disclosure of his files held by various U.S. agencies.

Production Hits 1.7million Barrels Per Day; Nigeria To Earn More Revenue – Minister

President Bola Tinubu has taken a proactive step by filing an application as an intervenor, following a Freedom of Information request made by IT consultant Aaron Greenspan in July 2022.

This application, filed on October 18, 2023, falls under Civil Local Rule 83.2(c) and is aimed at preventing the early release of records concerning Tinubu's residency in the United States.

Tinubu's lawsuit names several U.S. agencies as defendants, including the Executive Office for US Attorneys, the U.S. Department of State, the FBI, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the CIA.

These agencies had initially resisted releasing Tinubu's records, citing "unusual circumstances," and had committed to keeping them confidential until 2026. Despite this, the applicants persisted in their pursuit of an early release.

This legal battle extends into the public eye, as approximately 2,500 documents related to Tinubu, stored in the FBI database, are anticipated to be released in stages starting from October.

These documents are expected to shed light on controversies surrounding the President, including questions about his true identity.

This move by Tinubu parallels a previous intervention in an application by political opponent and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who sought the release of his academic records from the Chicago State University. Despite Tinubu's efforts, the court ruled in favor of Atiku, compelling the deposition of Tinubu's academic credentials.
