In a monumental stride towards inclusivity and human rights, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has formally ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa.


This significant move places Nigeria at the forefront of advocating for the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities on the continent.

President Tinubu, in a historic declaration, affirmed Nigeria's acceptance of the aforementioned Protocol and pledged to diligently uphold its stipulations. 



This formal ratification signals Nigeria's commitment to eliminating discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for persons with disabilities within the nation.



The African Disability Protocol was Adopted by the African Union in 2018, the African Disability Protocol addresses various forms of discrimination experienced by individuals with disabilities across African countries.

Serving as a supplementary protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (1981), it establishes vital standards to promote and safeguard human rights throughout Africa.



For the Protocol to become enforceable, a minimum of 15 member States must both sign and ratify it. 



Thus far, Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Mali, and Rwanda have joined this transformative endeavour, with several others on the cusp of ratification. Nigeria's formal acceptance of the Protocol marks a crucial step towards ensuring that persons with disabilities enjoy their full spectrum of rights.

The President's Declaration



"I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, do hereby formally declare that the Federal Republic of Nigeria accepts the aforementioned Protocol and undertakes to faithfully perform and carry out the stipulations therein contained,” stated President Tinubu, emphasising his commitment to this important cause.



President Tinubu's ratification of the African Disability Protocol is a watershed moment for Nigeria and the continent at large. 


This historic move not only solidifies Nigeria's dedication to human rights but also propels the nation into a leadership position in championing inclusivity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
