Setback for Super Eagles as Taiwo Awoniyi Faces Extended Sidelines Due to Groin Injury

The Super Eagles suffered a setback when their top scorer, Taiwo Awoniyi, got injured.

He hurt his groin in Nigeria's 1-1 draw against Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Awoniyi will be out for a while. The Nottingham Forest manager, Steve Cooper, said in a press conference that the 26-year-old player will have surgery.

This will keep him out of the game for a few months.

Awoniyi had recently recovered from a groin injury in October.

This setback is disappointing for the player and the club. Cooper expressed his sympathy, stating,

"It’s bad news on Taiwo; he’s had to have surgery, and he is going to be out for months."

Awoniyi got injured during the match against Lesotho in the 59th minute and had to be substituted.

Unfortunately, this means he will also miss the upcoming game against Zimbabwe.

Cooper recognized Awoniyi's value to Nottingham Forest. He highlighted his ability to score goals and how he has positively influenced the team.

"He’s become an important player for us with the goals he’s scored and the goals he will score for us," Cooper said.

"But he’s such a good guy, and a good professional who is desperate to do well, so to get an injury like this is harsh on him."

The Forest manager assured fans that the club would support Awoniyi through the recovery process, aiming to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible.

Reflecting on Awoniyi's previous successful recovery from injury, Cooper expressed confidence in the player's ability to bounce back.

The unfortunate timing of the injury raises concerns about Awoniyi's participation in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

The extended recovery period may jeopardize his chances of representing Nigeria in this prestigious tournament.

Fans eagerly await Awoniyi's return, finding hope in his previous comeback and wishing for a swift recovery.
